ITINERARY
DAY 1
ARRIVAL AT FARO (Portugal)
Pickup from airport and check in at hotel and head out to birdwatch in the nearby countryside for a spot of birding.
DAY 2
FARO MARSHES (Portugal)
We visit the famous Faro marshes for a great number of wetland species such as (depending on season, Purple swamphen, Whiskered tern, Audouin's gull and much more.
DAY 3
ALGARVE (Portugal)
We head inland to visit several open steepe habitats for Great and little bustards, Pin-taield and black-bellied sandgrouse, European Roller, short-toed and Lesser Short-toed Larks, Stone Curlew or Pin-tailed Sandgrouse and more!
DAY 4 - 6
DOÑANA NATIONAL PARK, EL ROCIO
After breakfast , we check out and depart for Doñana National Park. In the surrounding fields and wetlands, it is possible to watch species such as Purple Swamphen, Hen Harrier, Glossy Ibis and perhaps the first Squacco and Purple Herons arriving from their winter headquarters. Open fields have short-toed and Lesser Short-toed Larks, Stone Curlew or Pin-tailed Sandgrouse etc. Overnight at El Rocio.
Day 5
STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
Exploring the northern shore of the famous Strait of Gibraltar with magnicent views of two continents and the famous Rock of Gibraltar nearby. We will experience the amazing close views of bird of prey & stork migration, as well as visiting nearby Northern bald ibis breeding colonies and many other species. Overnight La Linea (same as previous night)
DAY 6
ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
Let you local guide and local Gibraltarian guide you through the famous Rock and discover the best birding spots on the Rock. We know the best areas for feeding Barbary partridges (guaranteed!), Blue rock thrush, Sardinian warbler, peregrine falcon, Mediterranean shag, Yellow-legged gull and a plethora of migrating raptors and songbirds. Discover some endemic flowers and other critters! great views at the top of the rock across the Strait of Gibraltar towards the african continent. Enjoy the only free range primates in Europe, the Barbary macaques.
DAY 7
AIRPORT
Enjoy a spot of early morning birding birding before heading to the airport after lunch.
A seven day tour of the best birdwatching sites in Southern Portugal, while in Spain, we visit Extremadura and the Monfrague National Park, home to the Spanish imperial eagle and Dońana National Park, stronghold of the Iberian lynx. Explore the Strait of Gibraltar and witness incredible bird of prey and stork migration, all with a fully licenced local guide. A trip to remember!
