Why SE Andalucia?
Birding in Andalucia is extremely rewarding, with more than 300 different species of birds make birdwatching in Andalucia hard to beat. The variety of habitats in Andalucía, from marshes, wetlands, plains and high mountains, make it one of the best birding areas in Europe. Southeastern Spain is an often overlooked region which provides a lot specialities, such as Trumpeter finch, Dupont’s lark and sometimes even the occasional rarity such the African Cream-coloured courser.

ALMERIA is located east of Malaga, part of Spain’s southern Mediterranean coastline in the Andalucia region. It stretches along the Mediterranean Sea, known for its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and desert landscapes. Many arid / desert species can be located here such as Black-eared wheatear, Lesser short-toed lark, Trumpeter finch, and Dupont’s lark despite being rare is still possible. Occasional but annual rarities include the Cream-coloured courser.

GRANADA is a great location for nature and famous for it’s delicious tapas too! Granada is a city of stunning natural beauty, nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, boasting the highest peaks in mainland Spain. This diverse landscape offers everything from snow-capped summits, to lush valleys and rolling hills covered in olive groves and almond trees. A great area for Alpine accentor, Red-billed chough, Golden & Bonelli’s eagles, Black wheatear and more. Our birdwatching tours in Granda are highly recommended!

MALAGA is located on Spain’s southern Costa del Sol, boasts a diverse and stunning natural landscape, combining Mediterranean coastline estuaries and marshes, rolling hills, and mountainous regions. The Málaga Mountains Natural Park (Montes de Málaga) is home of Azure-winged magpie. Wetlands provide White-headed duck and Slender billed gull. Our birdwatching tours in Malaga are highly recommended! Must try the typical fried anchovies “boquerones”, delicious!

Note: Route are generally set with some degree of flexibility possible and may change. Shaded red areas reflect the area covered. Exact routes will depend on weather / traffic during the course of the 7 days.

DAY 1
Arrival at Malaga airport, transfer to Village near Granada where we spend the 6 nights, stopping along the way to birdwatch. Four nights in a typically Spanish townhouse in Granada province (click on tour images tab) overlooking snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains, beautiful in the winter and early Spring!

DAY 2
Spend the day birdwatching in Granda province exploring the southern hills of Sierra Nevada mountains by vehicle and walking. Walking can be reduced in the event participants have any health issues or waling impediments, but at least some walking is to be expected. Great opportunities for observing orchids and other flora, as well as many higher altitude butterflies.

DAY 3
Explore the steppe habitats and mountains in the northern regions of Granada province. Target species will include Little bustard, Stone curlew, and both Sandgrouse species amongst many other birds, flowers and other nature.

DAY 4
A day birdwatching in Almeria region throughout it’s costal marshes and inland arid desert habitat for target species such as various larks, wheatears and more.

DAY 5
A day birdwatching in Antequera, from costal marshes and inland hills in search for species such as Slender-billed gull, white-headed duck, Audouin’s gull and much more. Watch out for the large fields of Common poppies (depends on season). Overnight in the beautiful town of Antequera.

DAY 6
Explore the costal marshes of the Malaga region, including amazing poppy fields and impressive mountain valleys. Target species include, Greater flamingo, Gull-billed tern, Great spotted cuckoo and many other raptors and waterbirds. Overnight in Malaga.

DAY 7
Transfer to airport stopping along the way for spots of birding – ensure to book an afternoon return flight if possible (contact me before booking any flights).

REQUIREMENTS
Visas are not required by UK nationals. Passports must be less than 10 years old at the date of departure (from start date) and have 3 months validity beyond the return travel date. You must make arrangement for your own travel / health insurance and medications.

Weather: Good weather approx 3/4 of the year. Mild temperatures expected at most times of the year, but considerably warmer temperatures during May – September, but can still be quite nippy in the early morning during Spring time – see weather graph below. Light trousers and thin long sleeved shirt can help avoid insect bites and recommended. A jacket and a sweater is recommended for the evenings even in late Spring. A light rain jacket may be required. Warmer clothing for late autumn / winter. Good walking shoes a must (no sandals!). Quite humid during the summer months July & August but area provides ample opportunities for bathing in streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs which is great fun whilst birding!

Difficulty: Generally easy, short walks and gentle pace suitable for all fitness levels. For the most part the tour will involve short drives with walking near the vehicle. A few of the of days may involve drives over 1.5 hours.
