Spain day tours

OVERVIEW
The strait of Gibraltar lies in a strategic location for birdwatching. Bird Migration of passerines, soaring birds & seabirds occurs almost year-round and the sheer numbers can be impressive in the peak seasons March-May & August-October.
Key summer passerines such as Greater short-toed lark, Tawny pipit, Orphean warbler, Golden oriole, subalpine warbler and many more, can often be observed during the tours (within season). Large land birds such as White and black stork are very often commonly encountered, as is the scarce Northern bald ibis. Birds of prey such as Honey Buzzards, Black Kites, Short-toed Eagles, Booted Eagles, Griffon Vultures, pass in their thousands, with smaller numbers of Egyptian vultures, Marsh, Hen and Montagu’s Harriers, Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzards, Ospreys, Eleonora’s Falcon and many other species.
ITINERARY
Itinerary will depend on the weather and wind direction on the day, see the itinerary tab for more info of general areas covered. Having experience passerine hotspots and bird of prey migration for the past 40 years, we know where the main passage routes will be the day before by paying attention to the clues natures gives you and which we have been able to tap into through the years.
BIRD PHOTOPGRAHY
We know exactly where to to be postioned to obtained the best photos. With the years, one tends to develop a sort of ‘perceptive ability’ to be able to predict small changes in wind direction which would influence where the main passage will flow by in order to be best positioned to photograph these lovely birds. Choose your dates during the Spring and Autumn on a first come first served basis.

The map below depicts the typical locations that can be arranged to be visited during a day tour (not everything can be covered in a day) with a starting point from the Gibraltar frontier, unless pickup / drop-off is mutually agreed from a nearby location. To cover all these areas I would recommend at least 3 day tours.

Weather: Good weather approx 3/4 of the year. Mild to warm temperatures expected at most times of the year, but considerably warmer temperatures during May – September, but can still be quite nippy in the early morning during Spring time – see weather graph below. Light trousers and thin long sleeved shirt can help avoid insect bites and recommended. A jacket and a sweater is recommended for the evenings even in late Spring. A light rain jacket may be required. Warmer clothing for late autumn / winter. Good walking shoes a must (no sandals!). Quite humid during the summer months July & August but area provides ample opportunities for bathing in streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs which is great fun whilst birding!

Difficulty: Generally easy, short walks and gentle pace suitable for all fitness levels. For the most part the tour will involve short drives with walking near the vehicle. A few of the of days may involve drives over 1.5 hours.
